Kybella Q & A

What is Kybella?

With deoxycholic acid as its active ingredient, Kybella is intended to treat submental fat, more commonly called double chin. Deoxycholic acid naturally exists in the body where it assists in the breakdown and absorption of fat. Injected into the area under the chin, fat cells are destroyed and flushed from the body. Since new fat cells are not regenerated over time, Kybella provides a permanent reduction in the fat resulting in a smoother and more defined chin profile. Dr. Naga and Dr. Keaney evaluate each patient to assess their suitability and the number of treatments expected for best results.

What can I expect during Kybella treatment?

Once a patient is assessed as a candidate for Kybella, a plan is made for between 2 and 6 sessions, each at least 2 months apart. Sessions last about 15-20 minutes and involve small injections directly into the double chin area. The number of injections and overall treatments depend on the size of the double chin. After the treatment, there is typically some numbness and swelling in the treatment area. These effects are temporary and usually resolve within a couple of days. Unlike some other cosmetic injections, the effects of which may last between 6 months and 2 years, the effects seen with Kybella are permanent. The fat cells are destroyed and the body does not generate new cells.

What are the possible side effects of Kybella?

Swelling does occur for a few days after the treatment and is a desired result since it indicates that the fat cells have been adequately treated and are being removed from the area. Mild temporary numbness can also occur. The more serious side effects are rare, and they can include weakness to the muscles of the face, trouble swallowing, and an uneven smile. These rare side effects are most often also temporary, and can occur more frequently if the injections are not performed in the correct area by experienced injectors. The physicians at SkinDC are experienced injectors who deliver excellent results with patient safety as the biggest priority.
