A double chin is a common condition that is often misunderstood and undertreated. A double chin can be due to excess submental fat, loss of skin elasticity or a combination of the two. The physicians at SkinDC know the importance of identifying the underlying cause because the treatment varies depending on the underlying condition. Correct identification and treatment of your double chin can lead to significant improvement and definition of your jawline.
An increase in submental fat, the thin layer of fat that forms below your chin, is the most common cause of a double chin. It is not always related to weight gain and can be due to genetics. Submental fat can effectively be treated with an FDA approved injectable, Kybella. This treatment dissolves fat cells through a series of injections. It is a noninvasive and nonsurgical treatment that provides permanent reduction in submental fat. Kybella is the first (and only) injectable designed to treat the double chin.
If your double chin is caused by loss of skin elasticity, the skin underneath the chin will sag and create a wrinkle giving the illusion of having two chins. You do not have to be overweight for this to happen to you and is common as one ages. The treatment is to increase the skin elasticity through an energy based procedure called Exilis. Exilis uses both ultrasound and radio frequency to cause a controlled thermal injury leading to skin tightening and improvement in the appearance of your double chin.
Kybella is a new non-surgical alternative that reduces the amount of fat stored in a double chin. Dr. Lina Naga and Dr. Terrence Keaney of SkinDC in Washington DC, use Kybella® injections, alone or in combination with other treatment options, to decrease the fat and tighten the under-chin area. Call SkinDC today to find out if Kybella is right for you.
With deoxycholic acid as its active ingredient, Kybella is intended to treat submental fat, more commonly called double chin. Deoxycholic acid naturally exists in the body where it assists in the breakdown and absorption of fat. Injected into the area under the chin, fat cells are destroyed and flushed from the body. Since new fat cells are not regenerated over time, Kybella provides a permanent reduction in the fat resulting in a smoother and more defined chin profile. Dr. Naga and Dr. Keaney evaluate each patient to assess their suitability and the number of treatments expected for best results.
Once a patient is assessed as a candidate for Kybella, a plan is made for between 2 and 6 injection sessions, each at least 2 months apart. Sessions last about 15-20 minutes and involve small injections directly into the double chin area. The number of injections and overall treatments depend on the size of the double chin. After the treatment, there is typically some numbness and swelling in the treatment area. These effects are temporary and usually resolve within a couple of days. Unlike some other cosmetic injections, the effects of which may last between 6 months and 2 years, the effects seen with Kybella are permanent. The fat cells are destroyed and the body does not generate new cells.
Swelling does occur for a few days after the treatment and is a desired result since it indicates that the fat cells have been adequately treated and are being removed from the area. Mild temporary numbness can also occur. The more serious side effects are rare, and they can include weakness to the muscles of the face, trouble swallowing, and an uneven smile. These rare side effects are most often temporary, and can occur more frequently if the injections are not performed in the correct area by experienced injectors. The physicians at SkinDC are experienced injectors who deliver excellent results with patient safety as the biggest priority.
