What Is Acne?

Acne is an inflammatory condition involving the oil glands on the skin that lead to the production of pimples. Cysts form when these pimples form deeper, or become more inflamed, and can lead to scarring. Blackheads and whiteheads are the result of clogged pores which then become inflamed. Acne most commonly affects the areas of the body that have the highest number of oil glands (the face, neck, chest, shoulders, and back).

Acne is the most common skin condition in the United States, affecting nearly 80 percent of people. However, not everyone’s acne is the same, and therefore different patients will respond to different treatment regimens. At SkinDC, acne treatment is personalized to the patient’s specific case, and the results achieved this way are far superior to ‘cookie-cutter’ acne treatment regimens.

Numerous topical and oral medications are available to treat acne, some more effective than others. At SkinDC, your consultation will include a discussion of the available treatments, as well as development of a treatment plan best suited to your skin type and type/degree of acne.
